The audition format is a 25-minute vocal interview session which does not require any advance preparation. Auditions are open to all students from 2nd-12th grade who love to sing, and who want to see what our directors and rehearsals are like. Children in groups of up to ten at a time, divided by elementary, middle and high school ages, will work with one of Strathmore’s ensemble directors and get a sense of warm up routines, music reading games, and learning some music to sing. Parents are welcome to observe.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do parents schedule an audition?

An online application link must be filled out and returned (audition application link HERE).

How should I prepare for my audition?

Warm-up your voice by singing before you arrive. Get a good night’s sleep before your audition and stay hydrated that day. Arrive 15 minutes early so your parent/guardian can check you in and you can relax.

What will happen at the audition?

You'll do singing exercises with up to nine other students in your approximate age group. Vocal Interviews are divided by elementary, middle and high school. You'll learn some music, do some warm-ups, meet our directors, and get a feel for what rehearsal is like. Your session will last about 25 minutes.

How are children placed in an ensemble?

For children entering grades 2-12 (who are at least 7 years of age), placement will be considered for the following ensembles:

  • Preparatory Chorus, rehearsing Mondays 5:30-6:30pm. Preparatory Chorus sings in the lobby before concerts and out in the community at other events, as singers develop skills to be ready to sing onstage starting in Apprentice Chorus.
  • Apprentice Chorus, rehearsing Tuesdays 5:15-6:15pm
  • Treble Chorus, rehearsing Tuesdays 6:30-8:00pm
  • Concert Chorus (open to unchanged male voices and girls), rehearsing Mondays 5:30-7:00pm
  • Young Men's Chorus (tenor/baritone/bass singers through age 18), rehearsing Mondays 7:15-8:45pm

Current members of SCC need not re-audition.  The evaluations for Preparatory, Apprentice, and Treble Chorus students will have the director's recommendation for ensemble placement for the following year, which by SCC tradition has been weighted towards age level.  Concert and Young Men's Chorus' do not have placement information, as those two ensembles represent our oldest students and they work on the most challenging repertoire among our ensembles.

What are the application and tuition costs? Are there scholarships available?

Tuition for the 2018-2019 is $675; students admitted mid-year will be charged $375. There is a $50 discount for siblings. The non-refundable application fee of $25, required prior to auditioning, will be credited to student tuition for students admitted to the chorus. Wardrobe costs not included. Scholarships are available for both tuition and wardrobe upon approval. Please contact Suzanne Bagheri at [email protected] to request an application.

When are parents/guardians notified about the audition results and placement?

Results and placement will be sent no later than July 20. Families must then confirm their acceptance of choir placement by registering their child(ren) for SCC via the provided online form and paying tuition. An informational welcome meeting will take place at the first rehearsals in September.
